Easy Healthy 4th of July Food Swaps

Pottawatomie County, let's get one thing straight: the 4th of July is for celebrating! The burgers, the fireworks, the kids running around with sparklers, Grandma's famous potato salad. You should enjoy it all.
But we’ll let you in on a little secret: feeling great on July 5th doesn't require sacrifice on the 4th. All you need’s a few sneaky healthy 4th of July food swaps so tasty nobody at your cookout will even notice.
Here's how to do the 4th, Pogo-style.
Start at the Grill

The grill is the heart of the holiday, and because grilling is one of the healthiest ways to cook, it's already doing you favors. A few ways to make it work even harder for you:
Swap a beef patty for a turkey or chicken burger. For even more flavor, load it up with grilled onions, peppers, and avocado (a bonus swap for mayo!)
Throw some veggies on the grates. Fresh corn on the cob, zucchini, summer squash, bell peppers — a little char makes everything taste like summer.
Enhance the sweetness of fruit. Instead of sugary desserts, toss some peaches or pineapples over the charcoals. The sugars from the fruits naturally caramelize.
Go bunless. Stack up all your favorite burger or hot dog toppings, then eat it open-face style. Don’t want to fork-and-knife it? Lettuce makes a great bun substitute.
Rethink the Sides Table
This is where cookouts get us. Between the chips, the dips, and the mystery casseroles, the sides table can pack more punch than the main event. Try these dupes:
Greek yogurt is your secret weapon. Swap it into your potato salad, your deviled eggs, or your ranch dip. A little tangy, a lotta good for you.
Put the veggie tray at the front of the line. True story: people load up on whatever they see first. Lead with the good stuff.
Try watermelon and feta salad instead of pasta salad. It's cold, it's refreshing, and in July heat like we get around here, it's basically a public service.
Sip Smarter

Oklahoma in July is no joke, friends. When you’re loading up your cooler, make sure hydration is the star of the show.
Freeze water bottles the night before. They’ll thaw as the day goes by, and when you reach for a refresh, your drink will be ice cold.
Set up a fruit-infused water station. Strawberries and blueberries in a pitcher of water adds a fruity flavor and a patriotic flair.
Use frozen fruit as ice cubes. The night before, freeze up grapes, blueberries, strawberries, or peach chunks. For extra hydration, toss a couple in some coconut water.
Try going half sweet, half unsweet on your tea. You might just surprise your taste buds.
Dessert Can Be a Showstopper

Mother Nature is already doing all of the work with the sweets table. Fruit is at its absolute peak right now, and it happens to come in holiday colors. Here are a few ideas that'll steal the show:
Hollow out a watermelon and fill it with fruit salad. Boom — dessert AND a centerpiece.
Swap popsicles for frozen grapes. The perfectly refreshing snack while you’re sitting poolside or lakeside.
Grab a star-shaped cookie cutter and go to town on fresh fruit. The kids will fight over them, and they look Instagrammable on your plate.
Make a watermelon pizza. Cut slices of melon into pizza-shaped slices, then top with yogurt and blueberries.
Build red, white & blue parfaits in clear cups. Yogurt, strawberries, blueberries. Five minutes of work, and it looks like you tried way harder than you did.
And One More Thing...
The best hack of all doesn't happen on your plate. Before the fireworks start, take the family on a walk around the neighborhood, get a game of kickball going, or set up cornhole in the yard. The holidays we remember aren't about what was on the table. They're about who was around it and what we did together. A little extra movement never hurt anyone either.
So this 4th of July, sneak a swap or two onto your plate, drink your water, and soak up every minute with your people. You don't have to choose between celebrating and feeling your best. Around here, we do both.
From our cookout to yours, Pott County. Happy 4th of July from your friends at Pogo! 🇺🇸
